The Spring Situated in the Pantiles, the Chalybeate Spring is at the heart of historic Royal Tunbridge Wells.
In 2006 the town celebrates the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Spring by Dudley, Lord North in 1606. It was the discovery of the Spring which marked the beginning of Royal Tunbridge Wells and its reputation in Georgian high society as a place to see and be seen. Queen Anne, Queen Henrietta Maria, Samuel Pepys and Daniel Defoe were amongst the many people who have come over the centuries to taste the purportedly health-giving iron-rich spring water. Today the water still flows and can be sampled in the summer months served in the traditional manner by a costumed 'Dipper'.
