This moated manor house near Sevenoaks originates
from the early 14th century. A Listed Grade 1 building and Scheduled Ancient
Monument, medieval in appearance, constructed largely of oak timbers and local
ragstone has had a succession of owners through the centuries. These include
Sir Richard Clement, a courtier of Henry VIII, the Selbys - who lived in
Ightham Mote for almost 300 years, and Sir Richard Colyer-Fergusson, who
resided here from 1889 until 1951.
Under threat of demolition or re-development, Ightham Mote was
fortunate that three local businessmen purchased it until a new owner appeared.
An American, Charles Henry Robinson, who in 1985 bequeathed it to the National
Trust, bought the house and an anonymous benefactor provided an endowment. A
£10million repair programme is now complete, and the visitor route
includes the Tudor Chapel, the Drawing Room, the Victorian Billiards Room, and
Mr Robinson's apartments. |
