St. CLEMENT'S CHURCH Knowlton, Kent

4 miles south west of Sandwich off the
A256 |
Administered by the Churches Conservation Trust
the church in St. Clements is in Knowlton Court, Knowlton.
Although outwardly Victorian
this small church set between the house and outbuildings of Knowlton Court is
actually mediaeval. Most furnishings date from 1841 but designed after an older
style. In 1855 William White carried out restoration on the church but left the
earlier furnishings alone.
With two magnificent
monuments including one commemorating the sons-in-law of Sir Cloudesley Shovel
and ascribed to Grinling Gibbons, as well as many others to the Peytons,
D'aeths, Narboroughs and Speeds, and with fascinating glass by Lavors, Barrand
and Westlake, this interior is unforgettable. |
