What a magnificent building, what a
wonderful location, so said Wm Hague on his arrival. You, too, can
savour the delights of this unique establishment sitting among the ornamental
grounds of the famous Folkestone Leas atop the 150ft high cliffs overlooking
the ever changing Channel seascape with views of France on clear days.
What could be better than a saunter along The Leas and Undercliff,
lately the beneficiary of Lottery largess to create the Lower Leas
Coastal Park with its Zig-Zag path, amphitheatre, stylish childrens
playground and both formal and naturally landscaped grounds bordering the
beach. Having worked up an appetite, return to The Grand for refreshments in
the Palm Court as did Edward VII a hundred years ago and countless
notables since. A cream tea is just £4.50, a Grand tea £7.50; the
Sunday carvery, £22, is renowned far and wide. You can even stay
overnight in a once royal apartment or the servants quarters!
The structure is the earliest large reinforced concrete building in
the world, and among other remarkable features has a steel frame, waterproof
insulation filled cavity curtain walling, suspended ceilings for soundproofing,
an elaborate system of service ducts including subterranean works, and the
first sprung dance floor in Europe on which the King took the first dance with
the Queen, and the second with his intimate friend Alice Keppel! Once you have
visited, you will return time and again its a magical place which
casts its own spell! |
