This attractive turreted castle is set in a
picturesque village on the banks of the River Medway.
Upnor Castle was originally built in 1559 as a gun
fort on the orders of Queen Elizabeth Ist to defend her warships at ancor in
the reaches of the Medway and Chatham Dockyard. There is a fascinating audio
visual interpretation telling the story of the Dutch raid upon the fleet in
graphic detail. |
