Dover Museum tells the story of the town and port since prehistoric times, a town that for centuries has been the Gateway to England. Displays include Dover's history as a Roman port, a Saxon town, the Cinque Ports, Napoleonic Wars, Victorian Dover and the two World Wars. Also on display is the world's oldest sea-going boat, found in Dover in 1992. The boat is 3,550 years old, older than Tutankhamun and from the same age as Stonehenge. The Bronze Age Boat gallery has won many awards since it opened, including the Archaeology ICI Award for 2000 and an interpret Britain award. Described as 'the best archaeological gallery in the country', the boat takes centre stage in its enormous glass case, lit by fibre optics. Some of the best Bronze Age finds from Kent are also on display and there are also fun 'hands on' activities for children such as microscopes, a large jigsaw and a computer game. The middle floor of the museum, the stairways and corridors are home to a changing programme of temporary exhibitions. Drop in family activity days are held at the museum every month. Entry to the museum is Free on Family Activity Days The museum also offers a wide range of educational visits. |
