Standing proud on the bank of the River Medway, Rochester Castle is one of the best-preserved castles of its kind.  It was a defensive building, but also a palatial residence, with evidence of fireplaces and ornately decorated arches still seen today.  At 113ft (34m) high, the keep is a prominent feature of Rochester's skyline and is the tallest in England.

Possibly the most notable element of the castle is its one round tower set against three square towers.  This is the result of a siege in 1215 by King John.  He undermined the south-east tower and burned the props with the fat of 40 pigs causing it to collapse.  it was rebuilt round rather than square to better deflect missile attack and work against future attempts of undermining.
