Rochester is an undiscovered treasure amongst England’s cathedrals, with glorious Norman architecture in the Nave and crypt and one of the finest Romanesque facades in the country. The building has a unique story to tell – a story which spans 1400 years of Christian worship and witness on the site and reveals so much more from within its ancient stones.
Amongst its many riches are the magnificent 14th century library doorway, a unique mosaic memorial to the Royal engineers, based in Gillingham and the first fresco to be created in an English Cathedral for over 800 years by Sergei Fyodorov. The size and brilliance of this vivid narrative painting, dedicated in 2004, has drawn many visitors from across the globe.
Enjoy projected exhibitions, providing a visual history of some of the Cathedral’s hidden gems, including the stunning 14th century Wheel of Fortune wall painting, discovered when the pulpit protecting it from the unrest of the Reformation and Civil War was removed during renovation work sin the 1820s.
This breathtaking space, described emotively in his final novel, by legendary local author Charles Dickens is also home to a memorial dedicated to his memory.
Visitors can now benefit from a range of audio tours- from families to individuals, to those seeking a more spiritual interaction with the Cathedral and options for hearing and sight impaired visitors- there is truly something for everyone!
