Squerryes Court in Westerham is a beautiful 17th century manor house which has been the Warde family home since 1731. It is surrounded by 20 acres of attractive gardens which include a lake, restored parterres and an 18th century dovecote. A medieval house was pulled down in 1681 and the present house built on the same site by Sir Nicholas Crispe. In 1700 the first Earl of Jersey purchased the house and John Warde bought it from his friend the third Earl of Jersey. The Wardes have been there ever since. The rooms furnished and used by the Warde family over 275 years are full of interest. The fine collection of Old Master paintings from the Italian, 17th century Dutch, 18th century English school, furniture, porcelain and tapestries were all acquired or commissioned by the family in the 18th century. |
